Social Media Communications

Social Media Communications
This is the course blog for the inaugural running of COMM597: Effective Social Media Communication for the Master's of Communication Technology at the University of Alberta. Strategy, skills and a high level of critical literacy are needed for effective social media communication. Too often social media is exaggerated, appearing only at one side of a spectrum: either as something that instills trepidation or something that generates awe. This course is intended to find that middle ground. An aspect of this course will employ theories of new media, media anthropology, communications and literacy to critically analyse and understand these current platforms. Additionally, through hands-on practise, participants will learn how to create content for various popular social media platforms, and to engage their communities and listeners in conversation. A special focus of this course will be the different writing needs of several major social media platforms, and the development of strategic and skillful writing for these platforms; i.e. developing best practises.
